Ornaments for Langston and Alciedo

Here's the second ornament I scuplted and painted for my son.  It's the other character I mentioned before, Eduardo, from Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends.  These two were fun and I'll likely make at least a couple more from the show next year.

This last ornament I painted for my young friend Alciedo.  He'll be eight at the end of this month.  Alciedo is a young artist, and we regularly exchange drawings.  I'll post some of our artistic correspondence at some point, I'm sure.

Langston's 1st Canvas: Finally Finished!

I just hung it in his room today.  I've got a couple of full-canvas shots and several detailed shots of each of the characters.

Next up:  His first name, Joseph, surrounded by Hanna-Barbera characters.  I'll post some pictures of the canvas when I get started sketching, hopefully within a week or so.

Another Ornament from Last Year

I painted this ornament for my dad last Christmas.  It marries his love of baseball with my love of Charles Schultz's Peanuts.

Monkey Mural

I've been working on this mural in my dining room for quite some time.  Like most things, I don't have a lot of time to devote to it.  It's based on a painting called The Drunken Cleric by an artist known as Shag (Josh Agle).  I stumbled upon one of his art books at Half Price Books and really enjoyed his retro-50s-jazz album cover style.  When I moved into my house, there was a carved wooden sign hanging over my sink, featuring two tiki heads and the word "CERVEZA'S."  So I thought:  why not continue the theme in the dining room.  Seemed like fun at the time.  The pictures show the mural at near completion.  I just have to touch up the blue-green background.  You might notice some yellow around a few of the figures. That, unfortunately, was the original color of the wall.  Drunken monkeys and tikis are a grand improvement, I think.

Here's an image of the original painting.

X-Mas Ornaments Round 2

These are actually some ornaments I made for this year.  The first I made out of Sculpy and painted for my son.  It's the character Bloo from the series Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, a highly underrated show that went off the air after three seasons, I think.  I've also sculpted an Eduardo from the same show.  I just have to finish painting him.  Then I'll post some more pictures.

This next ornament I painted for my best friend Adam.  I'm not sure if he's actually a fan of Donald, but the first ornament I sculpted for him didn't make it.  I rolled out the Sculpy too thin, so it was very fragile after baking it.  Eventually, I'll redo the original ornament (not saying what it was because it could be his X-mas present for next year), but he'll have to settle for Donald for now.  Why Donald?  He's one of my favorite characters, so I spent a lot of time making this one look as good as I could.  So on that level, at least, it's worthy to give to Adam.

Baby's First Show

My wife and I went to a Dave Matthews Band concert a few months after we found out she was pregnant.  It was the first DMB show we went to together, and, because it's one of my favorite bands, it was a big deal to me.  So, in honor of the occasion and in celebration of our baby news, I made a t-shirt with my rudimentary screen print kit for her.  It's kind of weird:  a baby in utero with a large pair of old school headphones on with a curly cord  that seems to have replaced his umbilical cord.  Not sure what it all means, but I thought it was a fun shirt and certainly unique.  No one else was going to have one at the concert.  The screen print ink has gotten a little worn with several runs through the washing machine, but you'll get the idea.

Murals Round One

When I first moved into my house, I painted a couple of murals, mostly out of summer boredom.  The first one was in my living room, but I don't have pictures of that yet.  The second one is in my bedroom.  It's based on a Gustav Klimt painting, The Fulfillment

Here's a copyof the original by Klimt.
